The main aspect of Splatoon, the online multiplayer, feels like a third-person shooter doing something innovative and original. With the focus on coloring the map with paint, everything looks colorful and it comes across as a new way of playing, which is simply fun.
However, the game does have some shortcomings when it comes to the single player mode, and the local multiplayer could have been better. These two game modes feel very limited. In short, when your Wii U is connected to the internet, Splatoon is definitely a recommendation in terms of online play. If you're more of a single player gamer, then you might want to pass on Splatoon.

Great game! It just doesn't offer much if you don't have an internet connection.
Splatoon is by far the best shooter I have ever played, as I am not a fan of blood at all, which is fortunately not present here! Additionally, the goal in Splatoon is not to kill as many opponents as possible, but mainly to mark your territory with ink! The team that has spread the most ink after a match wins! After each match, you receive experience points that allow you to level up and unlock weapons, but you also earn coins, which you can use to buy new weapons or clothing. There is a lot to purchase, so you won't get bored quickly! However, all of this requires an internet connection. Without an internet connection, you can't do much at all, you can't even access the shops.
You can still play the single-player mode, where the goal is to reclaim the energy of the city of Inkopolis from the Octopuses. Through this adventure, you can unlock blueprints for new weapons that you can use in online matches. So, having an internet connection is crucial to fully enjoy Splatoon.
