Fun multiplayer, but limited replayability
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games: Sochi 2014 for the Nintendo Wii U brings together two of the biggest video game icons for a sporting competition at the Olympic Winter Games. Like previous entries in the series, it’s a colourful collection of mini-games based on various Olympic sports such as ski jumping, ice hockey, and bobsleigh. For me, it’s a nostalgic experience with all those classic characters participating in the different sports.

The gameplay is simple and accessible, making it enjoyable for all ages. The Wii U GamePad is used in creative ways in some events, which I personally appreciate. Unfortunately, the controls aren’t always very precise, which can lead to frustration, especially in sports that require accuracy. Still, there are plenty of fun moments to be had, particularly in the multiplayer mode where the game truly comes to life. Competing with friends in the living room for the gold medal remains a delightful experience.

The visual presentation is bright and colourful, just what you would expect from a Mario and Sonic game. The characters are charming and the environments are inspired by both real Olympic locations and the worlds from the Mario and Sonic franchises. This offers a fun mix of reality and fantasy. The game is really well designed and provides sharp visuals on the Wii U. While the game is certainly enjoyable for an evening with friends or family, it lacks depth in the long run. The mini-games can quickly become repetitive and the single-player mode offers little motivation to keep playing. Fans of the series will have fun with it, but for others, the replayability is limited.

Fun and beautiful, but not innovative
I find Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games a fun game, with good graphics. There are also many cute characters to choose from, each with their own abilities: for example, Mario is an All-Arounder and Knuckles is very strong.
The only thing I find slightly less enjoyable is the lack of innovation in this game series, which doesn't really convince me to get a new installment anytime soon.

It's a very fun game when you can play it with friends or family, not really enjoyable on your own.
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games is a new installment in the Mario & Sonic series and is packed with events to enjoy. Choose from over 20 characters to compete in sports, originating from both the Mario and Sonic games! The events can be divided into two main categories. You have the realistic games, based on real Olympic sports. Think of events like skating, figure skating, alpine skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey, and so on. These events are relatively simple, but that doesn't make them any less fun. There are also the so-called 'Dream Events', which are Olympic sports with a touch of the Mario or Sonic universe. An example is 'Groove-Pipe Snowboarding', which takes place on a Mario Kart level. The goal is to reach the finish line on a snowboard as fast as possible. This is done very well because the music and the appearance of the track really make you feel like you're in the world of Mario.

After all the positive comments, I will address the slightly less favorable aspects of the game. In addition to the individual events, you can also play a kind of adventure called 'Legends Showdown', which is not particularly special because you simply play the same events but in a specific order. The other special game mode is Quiz Tour. Here, you once again play the same events but with a twist. You must perform a task at each event and give an answer afterwards; for a correct answer, you earn points and the one with the most points wins. This is fun when playing with friends or family (actually applies to the whole game), but it's not very enjoyable to spend your time on your own. There are a few challenges to complete if you play this game alone, such as achieving a certain score in figure skating or winning 5 gold medals with Mario. However, that's about it.
